Why Proper Head Bolt Torque Sequence Matters

Improper cylinder head fastener tightening is the number one cause of premature head gasket failure, localized combustion leakage between cylinders, and thermal deck warpage on cast-iron GM small blocks and big blocks. Torquing bolts strictly in a spiral sequence from the center outward ensures that the composite or steel-shim head gasket is compressed uniformly toward the cylinder block ends, preventing micro-wrinkles and localized high-stress spots around combustion chambers.

On all 1973–1987 Chevrolet Small Block V8s (including the base 305 LF9, the standard 350 LM1, and the heavy-duty 400), each cylinder head is anchored by 17 grade-8 bolts. Nine long bolts pass through the upper rocker arm valley into blind threaded holes in the deck, while eight shorter bolts along the lower spark-plug row thread directly into the engine's internal water jacket.

Failing to coat the lower row with high-temperature PTFE thread sealant allows pressurized engine coolant to seep up the threads under highway load. Required Airflow

(350 × 5,500 / 3456) × 0.85
Recommended Carburetor Sizing:

600 CFM Vacuum Secondary / Spreadbore

For a street-driven 350 V8, a 600 CFM carburetor (or a factory Rochester Quadrajet 750 with small 1-3/8" primary venturis) maintains high signal velocity past the booster for crisp part-throttle acceleration. Oversizing to a 750+ CFM squarebore causes low-RPM bogging.

STATUTORY MODEL SAE Standard J1349 / Holley Carburetor Engineering Handbook

Internal Combustion Engine Carburetor Sizing Formula

CFM = [(CID × Max RPM) / 3456] × Volumetric Efficiency
Notation: CFM = (CID * RPM / 3456) * VE

Variable Definition & Units

CID
Cubic Inch Displacement [in³]

Engine displacement (e.g. 350 ci for SBC 350, 454 ci for Big Block).

RPM
Peak Engine Speed [RPM]

Maximum engine RPM where peak horsepower is produced (typically 5,000–5,500 RPM on street GM trucks).

3456
Four-Stroke Constant [constant]

Mathematical constant converting cubic inches to cubic feet (1,728 in³/ft³) multiplied by 2 revolutions per four-stroke intake cycle.

VE
Volumetric Efficiency [decimal]

Breathing efficiency of engine (0.75-0.80 for stock factory heads, 0.85 for mild street cam, 0.95 for racing port work).

Calibrated Example:

350 CID × 5,500 RPM = 1,925,000. Divided by 3,456 = 557 theoretical CFM. Multiplied by 0.85 VE = 473.4 true CFM.

Frequently Asked Questions: Cylinder Head Torque Specs

01 What is the head bolt torque sequence for a Small Block Chevy 350?

Small Block Chevy (305, 350, 400) cylinder heads use a 17-bolt spiral pattern tightening from the center outward. Torque is applied in three progressive steps: Pass 1 to 25 ft-lbs, Pass 2 to 45 ft-lbs, and Pass 3 (final) to 65 ft-lbs. Clean engine oil is applied to the upper blind holes, while PTFE thread sealant must be applied to the lower row of bolts that penetrate directly into the engine block coolant water jacket.

02 Do Small Block Chevy head bolts require thread sealant?

Yes, the lower row of 8 cylinder head bolts on standard Small Block Chevrolet engines enter directly into the engine block coolant water jackets. If installed dry or with standard engine oil, pressurized hot coolant will migrate up the bolt threads, pool around the cylinder head bolt boss, and cause external coolant leaks or oil contamination. Always coat threads with a dedicated non-hardening PTFE thread sealant (such as Permatex 59214 or ARP Thread Sealer).

03 What are the main cap torque specs for a 2-bolt vs 4-bolt SBC block?

Factory 2-bolt main bearing caps on Small Block Chevy 350 blocks torque to 70 ft-lbs using clean 30W engine oil on the bolt threads and under the bolt heads. On heavy-duty 4-bolt main blocks, the inner bolts torque to 70 ft-lbs, while the outer bolts (which are shorter and often angled/splayed) torque to 65 ft-lbs.

04 What are the cylinder head torque specs for a Big Block Chevy 454?

A Big Block Chevy (BBC 454) cylinder head utilizes 16 head bolts torqued in three passes: Pass 1 to 40 ft-lbs, Pass 2 to 60 ft-lbs, and Pass 3 to 80 ft-lbs for standard length bolts. Medium/short bolts are torqued to 70 ft-lbs, while long bolts are torqued to 80 ft-lbs using clean engine oil on blind holes and thread sealant on any water jacket penetrations.
